The French artist JR is back at it yet again. Bigger is indeed better, and the artist is taking things to the maximum. He is telling the story of inmates at California Correctional Institution with Tehachapi. With their assistance, he created a one-of-a-kind art activation installed in the maximum security four facility’s recreation space. JR’s ‘Tehachapi’ Mural is named after the prison’s town and was created with 338 strips of paper.
The massive image covers the entire yard area of the prison, capturing the portraits and tales of CCI’s formerly incarcerated citizens and current inmates. These are the same folks who helped JR’s team in wheat pasting the work on the walls. The striking black and white image features 48 people looking upward and can only be seen either from above or via the artist’s custom app, JR:murals. You can also listen to each inmate tell their story by tapping on their picture. This man never disappoints, always taking his talents to new heights while supplying something captivating.
Take a look at JR’s ‘Tehachapi’ Mural below, as well as some behind the scenes shots on the Instagram posts, which can be seen below. Keep it locked with The Culture Curators for more from the art department coming very soon.
