Paying Homage | The Vision Mercedes Simplex

To celebrate the opening of their new design in Nice, the design team at Mercede-Benz turned back the clock. The Vision Mercedes Simplex is a concept car based on the 1901 35 PS. The first car to wear the Mercedes name. A two-seat cockpit behind a radiator and motor module, four outboard wheels, and a column-mounted steering wheel all look like the original, but that’s about where it stops.

That module now stores batteries for four electric motors in the outboard wheels. Those motors move only the tires though. The radiator shroud is now a rose gold frame for a 3-D display. Boasting the vintage Mercedes logo from the 1900s. A very clean and minimal cockpit is noticeably void of excess controls and gauges, much like the automobiles of old. A modernized feel using carbon fiber and rose gold details around the car merge the eras of today and years gone by. Unfortunately, laws, regulations, and safety standards will more than likely keep this stunning machine from logging any highway miles or seeing an assembly line.

This is truly an artwork inspired by a time before we knew seats could be heated. Let’s just imagine we’ll get back there one day. A for more details and a closer look, visit Mercedes-Benz and find out more about the Vision Mercedes Simplex.
